These solar-powered refrigerated tuktuks are helping Cherehani Labs extend the cold chain to the last mile, bringing vaccines and AI-powered diagnostics closer to pastoralist communities.

One of the fun things we learnt when we started this journey is that an affordable kitchen refrigerator cannot simply be put in a moving vehicle and be expected to work! 🤣

Moving refrigeration is a completely different engineering challenge, especially when you need to maintain the 2–8°C cold chain across rough rural roads, without reliable electricity. That’s why we’ve had to rethink how veterinary services can be delivered to the last mile.

Each tuktuk represents more than technology. It represents hope for pastoralist communities that no longer have to fear cooler seasons when Peste des Petits Ruminants(PPR) can wipe out, at times, half of their goat herds.

They also represent equality, giving pastoralists the same opportunity to access quality veterinary care and the freedom to choose whether, when and how much to invest in the health of their livestock.

By combining solar-powered cold-chain technology with AI-powered diagnostics, Cherehani Labs is working to bring essential veterinary services closer to where the animals and their owners are.
